Which is why Republicans should be told to go screw themselves and we should just go ahead with one of the House bills. There is no sense in trying to compromise with people whose only goal is to obstruct progress.

I must say, my new (second) favorite House member - after, of course, Mr. Frank of Massachusetts ("Arguing with you would be like arguing with a dining room table - I have no interest in doing it.)" - is Mr. Grayson of Florida.

Every American needs quality, affordable health care. The Republicans seem to implicitly admit this. During the Finance Committee markup, Senator Jim Bunning (R-Texas) said the public option would be a "major step toward universal health care coverage.” That was his argument AGAINST it.

Providing universal health care coverage is somehow a bad thing?

And here I thought that was one of the objectives of health care reform.

Comment on Get Wall Street While It’s Down – The Need for Tough Regulation by Tom Degan

Hey, Democrats! Although I left your silly party over a decade ago, my heart is still essentially with your platform and agenda. That being said, I would ask all of you to think of me as Dr. Degan, your loving and trusted family veterinarian. After a complete and thorough examination of your beloved pets, it grieves me to offer you this final diagnosis:

Your Blue Dogs must be put to sleep.

The Democrats are not going to distinguish their party by trying to sell themselves as Republican Lite. They're not going to turn America around by foolishly preserving the policies of the last thirty years. They need to educate their constituency by showing them the folly of their abhorrence of things "Left" and "Liberal". Three-quarters-of-a-century ago, American democracy was saved by a government that was decidedly left-of center in all but a few areas. It can happen again. But it's only going to happen if WEEDA PEEPOLE refuse to turn right at the next crossroad. It is only down the road.

Now if you'll excuse me, Dr. Degan has some Blue Dogs on his table that need to be put out of our misery.

I'm more for focusing on cutting back on the legal powers of the presidency then its ceremonial and traditional role. I mean, Jimmy Carter tried to fight back against Nixon's notion of the presidency through steps like carrying his own overnight bag, staying at the homes of supporters while campaigning and walking on inauguration day and that did as much for curtailing executive power as Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the face. There is a need to resist the tide of ever-expanding presidential powers but at this point we need about every bit of civility in public life we can get. I mean, why can't a Neo-Confederate like Wilson try to remember Southern manners and lay of the psychosis and moonshine? Which is not to say challenging leaders, mocking them or questioning government policy needs to include powdered wigs and stuffed shirts, it just means that you speak to President Obama with a greater degree of formality than you would use in a Rolling Stone article or Tweet.

Also, another approach discussed on some blogs would be to adopt the British tradition of heckling heads of government, but first to elevate the quality of our heckling to a more internationally respectable level. At present, not only does every American child trail every East Asian child in math and science, there is also a growing gap with the British in such key areas as political heckling and warm beer drinking. And neither of those situations is nearly so shaming as our skill in sports riots where we are certainly not up to Premier League standards. Thankfully we still top the suspiciously nice and reasonable Canadians. Maybe it's because of their whole obsession with "providing health care for all" or "limiting violent crime" or "not alienating the rest of the world."

You know, Rep Wilson was more than a little rude to shout out in the middle of a joint session of Congress, but I still feel a little ambivalent about the whole thing; the presidency as an institution has become such a mythical, powerful thing, it could use being knocked down a peg or two. The imperial presidency (Lowi! Sanders!) has generally done as least as much harm as good and this whole situation with a joint head of state and head of government doesn't help the situation. I guess I think we should respect the man for his accomplishments and the office for the great men who came before, but let's not worship or deify them. After all, the writers of the United States Constitution specifically rejected an elected monarch.
